What Are You Doing Today?

Yesterday is often the most used word I hear when speaking to seniors.  Yesterday I was involved in this…yesterday I used to do that…yesterday was a time when I could always be counted on to be of service.   However, I want to strongly assure you that you are a valuable person to the church TODAY!

As a pastor’s wife, there were many things we counted on our faithful seniors to do.  They were the best “volunteers” in the church.  The seniors came regularly to help with large mailings, staff the phones, and attend to the many details of caring for a large facility and grounds.  It was the seniors who offered extra hands when we hosted large events.  Their willingness to greet, staff the parking lot, and cover the many other details relieved us to do other things.

The seniors blessed the entire church and community by manning the food pantry and carrying on the Intercessory Prayer Circle.  My heart was always refreshed to hear these wonderful people calling out to God on behalf of the church and community.  Their part was necessary in making it a great church.

I am reminded in Scripture of people you and I would consider “seniors” who were still actively pursuing God’s will.  Caleb would be the most recognizable for at the young age of 85, he said, “‘As yet I am as strong this day as I was on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in.  Now therefore, give me this mountain…and I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said.’  And Joshua blessed him, and gave Hebron to Caleb…as an inheritance” (Joshua 14:11-13 NKJV).

A note I recently received from a 90-year-old saint stated, “I still teach, preach, and play the piano in the services.”  Seniors, do not let your age stop you from being a blessing to the church and community.  Yes, there may be things you did yesterday that you cannot do today…but look around and see what you can do TODAY that will affect TOMORROW!  You are of great value and can still do much for the kingdom of God.

During our travels, my husband, the district superintendent of Georgia, and I observe many seniors serving in the local church.  This blesses the church and the kingdom!
