Holiday Safety

'Tis the season to be jolly... and safe. People tend to let their guard down when they are caught up in the holiday spirit. Thieves find the Christmas season to be a prosperous time of year. Whether traveling, shopping, or leaving wrapped presents under the tree, you should work to prevent becoming a victim of crime.

Follow these hints to keep safe during this season and all year through:

If your Christmas tree is near a window, keep the curtains closed when you are not at home. This prevents burglars from peering inside. Place gifts in a concealed area instead of under the tree.

When going out in public, take friends so you will not be alone. Be alert to your surroundings.

Park in well-lit areas. Hide shopping bags and gifts in the trunk. Lock the doors when you get back into your car.

If you plan to arrive home after dark, leave on lights, the television, and/or a radio to make it appear someone is home.

If you plan to be away from home for more than one night, consider installing timers that turn lights on and off throughout the evening. Also, have your mail and newspapers stopped or picked up by a friend.

Avoid carrying cash. Pay with a check or credit card when possible.

Properly install and use sturdy locks on your doors and windows. Always lock the doors when leaving the house even if you will return in a few minutes.

Beware of strangers who come to the door. Always ask for identification before letting them in. If you hear someone breaking into your home, flee to a neighbor's and call the police.

If you are unable to leave, lock yourself in a room with a phone and call the police. If an intruder is in your room, pretend you are asleep.

Install outside lights or an outdoor motion sensor that turns on when someone approaches at night. Well-lit areas deter burglars.

If you return home and something looks questionable (an open door or broken window), do not go in. Call the police from a neighbor's house or a public phone.
