A Gift That Lasts A Lifetime |
The
love for books begins at an early age. Long before children can
read, they enjoy hearing books read to them. This is especially
true if the reader puts expression into the story.
As senior adults, you can motivate young readers
to enjoy books on their own. Consider these guidelines:
Carefully
choose books with good content. Avoid scary stories, stories with
questionable behavior, and stories which contradict your moral values.
Choose
books with pretty pictures.
If
possible, let the child sit on your lap and even turn the pages
for you.
Read
the same books repeatedly. Children enjoy hearing stories more than
once.
As
children begin to read, have them read to you.
Buy
a variety of books: those with funny stories; those which are informational
in nature (historical, biographical, etc.); and, of course, Bible
story books.
When
reading, stop to explain words or actions which may not be understood.
Begin
reading to children at a very early age to motivate them to read
for the rest of their lives.
