EMERGENCY SUPPLIES |
With unpredictable weather patterns, it helps to be prepared for emergencies such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, fires, etc. Otherwise, we can be left to the mercies of relief agencies and churches. It is suggested that we prepare to initially take care of ourselves for at least 72 hours (3 days).
It might help to put together a small duffle bag or backpack with some of the following items in it for such emergencies:
- A one-week supply of medications, sorted.
- A written list of medications.
- Three to six bottles of water.
- Several high-energy bars.
- Photocopies of your driver’s license, social security card, medical cards, etc., in a waterproof bag.
- A small bottle of headache tablets.
- Tape, bandages, and antibiotic cream.
- A small amount of money—$20-50.
- Wet wipes or antibiotic hand cleaner.
- A few packets of tissues.
- A change of undergarments.
- A flashlight with fresh batteries.
- Emergency numbers and names of family members, doctors, and friends.
- A sheet of plastic to protect you from rain, etc.
The duffle bag or backpack should be kept at a convenient place to pick up quickly if you have to leave the house. Do not overload it. Keep it as lightweight as possible while still meeting your immediate needs.
Rotate medications and food items so they do not get old. Replace with fresh items.
Check the flashlight batteries every three to six months. Replace if necessary.
Each family member should have a small bag just in case you get separated from each other. Put an identification card on each bag complete with name, address, and telephone number.
Practice periodic fire drills, evacuation routes, and tornado safety. Each situation is different. Be prepared.
Then, hope and pray you NEVER need these emergency items.
